You do not need to use a button to download a file, you just
need to place a link to the file, which needs to be in your
current web. If you must have a button, you could make an
image (gif, jpg or whatever) and insert that picture. Set
up your hyperlink and you are all set.

Just add the file to your Web, and then configure a
hyperlink that points to it.

In theory, any file format will do. Some formats, however,
may open by default in the browser window rather than
displaying a download dialog box. If this isn't
acceptable, then either:

1. Add a nearby comment that tells Web visitors to right-
click the link and choose Save Target As...
2. Stick to always-download formats like ZIP.

some ISP admins may also limit the formats of files allowable on their servers
(ie. no executables....VB progs for example).

Others give you free-range.....

I suppose the most common would be for example, txt, zip, pdf, html, jpg, gif,
possibly MS office documents: doc, xls, ppt or mdb.
