I am running Windows XP , service pack 2......& am only on dial up...A friend
suggest I download Download Accelerator Plus 7.5 to speed things up when I
am downloading off the internet..... Does anyone use it & is it safe to use,.
also is it easy to remove if I have a problem with it..

I would pass on them. Your connection speed equates to a
pipeline. No matter how many connections to a server you
make or how data is downloaded/re-packaged it's all limited
by the connection speed. Best to save your money or apply
it to the new "Entry Level" DSL service(s) that are available
now for as low as $20-25 a month.

Thanks

It's snake oil.

No program can increase your connection speed beyond that which is allotted
you by your service provider. What these programs do is cache frequently
visited pages locally so that they "appear" to download faster. Sad part is,
that's what the Temporary Internet Files are for, the difference being that
the accelerator programs are not free.

No matter what people say about these so called "drive accelerators", they
DO NOT give you increased download speed. That is controlled by the amount
of bandwidth you have purchased from your Internet Service Provider.

What the accelerators do is cache frequently visited web sites on their
local servers so that when you go to load a WEB PAGE, it loads faster. If
you are downloading say a 100 meg file, the download speed remains the same
(as controlled by your available bandwidth). And guess what! The function of
the temporary internet files, which are cached locally on YOUR computer, do
the same thing as the download accelerators.

DAP has a history of installing spyware.

Have you looked at NetZero? They provide a accelerator function that
works by compressing or resampling images so that they come across at
what appears to be faster. Yes, it's not changing the speed, but it does
change how fast pages display/update. By changing the quality of images
you can see what appears to be a 100% increase in performance.

While I don't use NetZero, I've seen it work over dialup
enabled/disabled and it's a noticeable difference when enabled.

Star DownLoader is free. It is as good as Download Accelerator. Dial
up is slow but, with either of these two programs if you loose your
connection they will pick up the download where it quit.
