downgrading 2000 pro to 98

I installed 2000 and it totally slowed my old laptop that Im donating to a
childrens home.. I want to install 98 on my old toshiba and just set it up
for basic networking. Will the 98 disc allow me to install 98 or will it
tell me there is a newer version and wont allow it..Do I have to use a boot
disc and fdisc or wil it install?
 
You will have to format the drive and install Windows 98 from scratch.
We don't know what file system Windows 2000 was installed on, if it was
installed on NTFS then you will have to use fdisk to delete the
partition and create a new one that you will then format to FAT32 for
the Windows 98 installation.

Do I need a bootdisc via floppy or can I just go to command and type in
fdisc? I''ve done this a long time ago but needed step by step
instructions.. Thanks

You can boot from a win98 startup disk then run fdisk or you can boot the
Windows 2000 CD-Rom, starting setup, then delete all partitions found and
then abort the install. Now boot the win98 CD-Rom to start the installation.

added more, would it help once 98 is all updated and installed? Thanks David

It would probably help, even for Windows 98 32MB RAM is not very much
RAM, if you can add more it certainly wouldn't hurt. However,
considering the age of the machine it may be difficult to find RAM for
it, and if you do find RAM for it you shouldn't spend too much money for
it, the money may be better spent on a different machine.

When I used WindowsMe I went from 64mb ram to 128mb and I was quite
impressed with the news found performance and wished I had done that
long before.

Look for a used computer parts place. My older laptop had 64 mb ram
and went to 128 and
it started actually working very well after reinstalling win2000

If you added more memory it would even help the Win2K that you have
installed. It would run very badly on 32 meg and that is part of your
problem. Whether Win2K would run sufficiently well on your old machine
even with the extra memory is problematic, but if you are going to do it
anyway you might want to try it before you revert to Win98.

Just be aware that Win98 is no longer supported at all by MS. No
security patches, etc... You may have to dig to find older software in
some cases, as many are dropping Win9x/Me support and will refuse to
even install or run. It could instantly become a malware target if it's
connected to the Internet.

Win2K at least has some support, with security fixes still being
created, and alot of software still runs on it, if it's not outright
supported. It's mostly multimedia and similar that is dropping support
as more and more are requiring WMP11 (XP/Vista only).

As you mentioned in another post, it only has 32M of RAM. Even 64M will
make a major difference, 128M is a sweet spot. You might be able to find
some old RAM cheap on-line or Ebay or similar.

I didn't think W2Kpro would install with less than 64M?
