I have a new Sony Computer and I need to know if it is
possible to remove XP and add 98 to my computer. XP is
not compatable with some of our programs that we need to
run our credit card system.

HELP PLEASE!

Yes you should be able to. Contact Microsoft for Win98 CD media and a
license.

Did the computer come with Windows XP?
If so are there the necessary drivers for Windows 98?

Have you tried the applications in Compatibility Mode.
Start/All Programs/Accessories.Program Compatibility Wizard
Check with the program manufacturer if you already have not.

Follow this to get to Windows 98:

It's certainly possible to do. If the system is using the NTFS file system,
right click the drive on which XP is installed in Explorer or My Computer,
select properties, on the general tab, it will tell what type of file
system, you will need to first delete the partition as follows.

Assuming you have a Windows 98 boot disk from your previous 98 setup, boot
with the disk, type FDISK and press enter. Once in FDISK, select Delete
NON-DOS Partition and then delete it. Then select, create new Primary
Partition, set it active, reboot with the boot disk, type format C: and
press enter. When complete, with the 98 CD in the drive, switch to that
drive by typing the drive letter followed by a colon and press enter, then
type setup, press enter and follow the screens.

If the file system is Fat32, simply boot with the boot disk and follow the
instructions above for formatting and setup.

Note, you will likely need to check with the manufacturer's of your various
hard ware devices including those included with the Sony Computer for
drivers that will work with Windows 98 and there's a chance not all such
devices will work under a Windows 9x system.

You will also invalidate any - and most likely all - warranties conferred on
that system at the point of sale. Most manufacturers consider a change of OS
a 'significant alteration' and will refuse to honour any warranties. Think
about this carefully before you do anything hasty.

I just got a new machine with xp installed. I need win98 but as of now have
not been able to get win98 to see all my hardware, notably sound and modem.
On the other hand winxp will not see my old PaperPort scanner.
My solution is to use bootitng from bootitng.com. By creating completely
separate partitions for your os's, you can have the best of both worlds. In
my case I share all application data. Note I was a happy user of bootit on
my old machine, excellent product.

Michael;
This will not work.
Microsoft will not provide anything for OEM users.
Certainly not media and a Product Key.

Not for free, but M$ will certainly sell a W9x CD to anybody.
If you buy a W9x CD, I suggest that you pay attention to the
vendor's return policy, since W9x (an old OS) may not work on
a new PC.
