Doubleclicking a File

When I doubleclick a file it opens the associated program but does not load
the file and will crash the program when I close it. Other file types work
fine (*.xls, *.doc) when I doubleclick them. Any ideas what to look for
here?

What file type and program causes the issue?

You've told us which file types (*.xls, *.doc) work, but not what file
types don't work. You also haven't told us what the associated
program(s) are for those that don't work. Please provide that
information.
 
It's our project management software, WBS Chart Pro
(www.criticaltools.com/wbsmain). The .wbs file is an XML-based file type.
Doubleclicking the .wbs file works on other Vista machines but not on one in
particular. I tried looking at the file association properties of a .wbs
file in Vista but I could only see where to assign it to a new program not
read its properties. Can you do this in Vista?

Could this be some sort of permission issue where doubleclicking a file will
start the associated program and not pass the file parameters due to some
security setting? Just a shot in the dark...

Since the software works on other Vista machines and the issue is confined
to one particular workstation, I would try and determine what is different
about this workstation. Did the software ever work on this computer? If
yes, what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

If not, then what is different about this particular workstation when
compared to the ones on which the software works? Hardware? Other programs
installed?

Trying to figure out "how Vista does things" is not the way to troubleshoot
this since the software does work on other Vista machines.
