Hi,

I have an odd problem... which seemed to arise after
updating Explorer (and later arrived after updating
Navigator). On sites which use Doubleclick, the ad pops up,
but does not load. Instead I get a box asking for my
username and password. I can X out of it, and it will load a
page. Sites without doubleclick do not seem to be a
problem. Though I am not absolutely sure, it does not
appear to be a problem with privacy settings or with a firewall
(though I do run Zone Alarm).... I would really appreciate
your help on this one... I am stumped!

Thanks,
Robin

Block doubleclick and more with a HOSTS file.

Really there is no need to set up a "Hosts" File which can be a bit
complicated for the average user .In IE 6 go to Tools/ Int Options/Privacy
then click on Edit and then Block 'Doubleclick.net or double click.com
whatever the name of the Cookie. Doubleclick and there ilk sometimes come in
different names so it is a matter of watching for the names of the cookies
and blocking.
I have found this most successful.

What's to "set up"? You simply copy the file to the proper location.

While adding "doubleclick" to the Privacy (always block) is fine,
it does not address the OP problem. Blocking cookies has nothing
to do with ads generated in a web page. You'd be better off adding
sites like these to the "Restricted Zone"

You have more knowledge on this than me I feel sure ,but I know that I have
not had a doubleclick cookie set since I made those settings .Possibly I may
be confusing stopping Cookies with stopping Ads .However, I seem to get few
of the undesirable pop up ads that do not legitimately relate to the
particular website I am viewing . I always presumed it was due to my
blocking the the various adserver cookies .It seems from what you say I am
mistaken.
I have had a look a few times at the instructions in the use of a "Hosts"
file and to me anyway it does seem a bit messy and I have, till now at
least ,considered it not worth the trouble . But that is me I guess.

Graeme,
The HOSTS file in no way affects your Privacy or Security settings.
This file makes no changes whatsoever ......

127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
The "127.0.0.1" reference basically is your machine.
When "ad.doubleclick.net" is found on a website the machine looks for it at
127.0.0.1.
Of course it is not found and does not load that ad. This also applies to
websites that
are referenced in the HOST file. This helps prevent you from being hijacked
or worse!

Yes I update the file usually weekly, you'll find the Date of the last
update on my site.

Thanks Mike,
I have had a look at your site and I see now that the Hosts file
concept does more than just relate to Ads .To give it a try, if I
install the file you have available will that conflict in any way
with my current Privacy or Security settings in IE .
Also, I don't quite understand the locality reference "127.0.0.1"
is that just an example or does it apply to all computers or does my
computer have its own .
I also assume I would have to update the Hosts file from time to
time . My age may be catching up with me, but this is not
straightforward to me .

Graeme

Thanks Mike for the information ,I will give it a go . It will obviously
add another layer to securing my computer.
