Double fax wizard

I'm running Windows XP with all the updates installed.
Last month, suddenly I got a double fax wizard when
sending a fax from within an MS Office document. First,
the newer-looking wizard (very colourful-looking with
small squares running down the left side) opens and shows
you what document is going to be sent with a cover sheet.
After stepping through the process, the wizard notifies
you that the fax is sent, but it isn't. If you look at
the preview, it's only the cover sheet, with no document
attached. Then the older wizard opens automatically and
you go through the whole process, again without the
document attaching.

You've got it backwards. The first Wizard is the older wizard. It is Word's
Fax Wizard. It was designed for the old Microsoft Fax program in Win 95/98
and is of no relevance with Windows XP Fax. Skip it.
The second wizard is the newer Win XP Send Fax Wizard. That is the one you
should use. More details here:

Thanks for the help, Russ. It's puzzling, though, because
this is a new machine with vendor-installed Windows XP
and I installed MS Office XP myself. So, I'm not sure
where the older version of the fax wizard would have come
from. It also didn't appear until recently. How do I get
rid of it, since the old wizard appears first and
requires me to create the cover sheet, etc. or
to "cancel." If I cancel, then I do not get the second
fax wizard. If I "finish" the old wizard and then go to
the second wizard, my MS Office attachment is not
attached?

There is no older version of Fax. What you're seeing is the Office Fax
Wizard which was simply not updated to interact with Windows XP Fax. It was
designed for Microsoft Fax, which, of course, you do not have when running
Windows XP.
They didn't get around to fixing this until Office 2003.

Just don't invoke the first. Print to the Fax Printer.

Thanks, again, Russ. But how do I get rid of one of the
fax wizards? Right now I cannot fax an MS Office document
attachment. The first wizard (which includes attachments)
cannot be ignored, it must be completed, but will not
actually fax anything. Then the second wizard appears and
needs to be completed. The second one faxes, but will not
include the attachment. Thanks.

How do I get rid of one of the fax wizards, Russ? I can't
ignore the two fax wizards. I have to use both of them or
I have none. The problem is that the first wizard doesn't
fax, and the second wizard will fax, but will not attach
an MS Office document.
