Hi!

All of the sudden my mouse's double-click won't work to open docs or
folders. I checked the mouse on another computer, and it's not it. I
checked the mouse's settings in 2 places and they are fine. I restarted and
it didn't help. I did a Last Known Good Configuration, and it didn't help.
Whew. :)

I desperately don't want to do a system restore. Is that my only choice?

I just can't tell you how much I appreciate your help, and having found this
forum!!

Thank you so very much,

Try the associations fix for LNK and possibly others.

Fix File Associations.

Windows launches Search Companion window when opening any folder:

This one didn't seem to be the same problem. But thank you!

Go to Start/Run and type :

reg.exe add "HKCR\Drive\shell" /ve /d "none" /f

I did this, but it did not fix the problem. (I should ask -- the input box
disappeared, and nothing happened; is that fine?) Can you tell me what it
is that I did when I inputted it? Does it need to be reversed since it
didn't work?

Thank you oh so much!

Hi Mark,

I forgot to ask --

When I went to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555439, it said:

"NOTE: It is recommended to have a good backup of Windows Registry before
applying the solution, as incorrect modifications may cause severe problems,
and you may need to reinstall Windows operating system."

Could you tell me how to back up the registry?

Thank you so very much!

Hi Mark,

I forgot to mention that when I tried this, and it didn't work, I *did*
restart my computer, in case that was necessary.

Thank you so much again,

Use System Restore.

Hi David,

Thank you! Is it important to use system restore? It always creates even
more problems. But if I need to do it, I will.

Can you tell me what it was I told my system to do when I put the string
into Run?

Thank you again!

There are only two ways provided by Windows XP to safely backup and restore the
whole registry. One is System Restore and the other is by using Windows' backup
utility (ntbackup.exe) to save the System State.

How to use the Backup utility that is included in Windows XP to back up files
and folders
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308422/

A better method is provided by using ERUNT, an excellent freeware utility. Get
it here: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

Regarding the command string cited by Ferguson, I'm not familiar with the use of
the reg.exe console tool, I can only assume that it would accomplish the same
manual task as detailed in the MS KB article, which was:

Go to Windows registry.
Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell

Double-click Default key in the right window pane and change the value to None
