For a while now, my mouse has been misbehaving. When I double-click
text, Word does not select the entire word *until I release the mouse
button*. This makes it impossible to double-click-then-drag to select
multiple words. Also, when I try to resize a window, the mouse pointer
shows a double-headed arrow, but when I click and drag, it "misses" the
border and takes it as a click of whatever window is underneath the one
I want. But I found the problem, and am posting this simply in case
anyone else encounters it.
My laptop was using the wrong mouse driver. It's a Compaq Evo N610c
with a Synaptec touch pad. Windows was using the Synaptec driver even
though I have an Intellimouse Optical mouse attached. I disabled the
touchpad, then restarted the machine. Windows "noticed" the optical
mouse, and the problem she is solved.
