Does anybody have a way to prevent a user from double
clicking the 'programs' icon on the start menu? When this
is done, the user can get into the directory tree and work
his way into the file structure, even with a security
policy for that user set. We have verified the security
policy and all is correct. Currently we are running
windows 2000 workstation, sp 4. The security policy has
been in place for years using nt 4.0. and all other
software is the same. I verified that windows nt 4.0, sp
6 didn't allow a double click on the start menu. Any
information would be appreciated.

thank you,

Ultimately you need to rely on ntfs permissions to keep users from accessing
applications or data that you do not want them to have access to. However there are
many Group Policy options that may help. I don't know if there is one exactly for
what you want, but look under user configuration/administrative templates/windows
components/Windows explorer and under /administrative templates/start menu where
there are many options to hide or remove access for a user. If you are not in a W2K
domain you would have to use gpedit.msc on the local computer keeping in mind that
Local Group Policy applies to ALL users that logon including administrators though an
administrator could manage Group Policy remotely from another W2K computer that is
not locked down. --- Steve
