Hi, Gentlemen
I am new in this group and a novice with computers. I
have been using hp OfficeJet 635 All-in-one Printer with
my old machine with Windows95 system. This machine
crashed and now I am using DELL desktop with Windows XP
Home Edition. Hewlett Packard suggested me to download
new Driver from their website. I have downloaded the
driver and went onto install on my computer. In middle of
the process I received a message saying "Dot4.sys" file
is needed and asked to insert the Windows XP CD. The
system could not find the file "Dot4.sys". Can someone
help me to download this file. I shall be grateful.

dot4.sys is normally in the driver.cab file.

The driver.cab file should be in C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386. By default,
"Search" will not search in there, but you should be able to navigate to it
in Windows Explorer. There is a possibility that the folder or the file is
"hidden" and thus don't show up. If this happens, in Windows Explorer,
click Tools, Folder Options, View, then:.

- Add a check mark to "Display the contents of system folders"

-Select the "Show hidden files and folders" radio button

- Remove the check mark from "Hide extensions for known file types"

- Remove the check mark from "Hide protected operating system files
(Recommended)". You will get a "Warning!" message box. Read the warning
and click Yes.

(Note that after you have installed the printer driver, you can go back to
the Folder Options, View tab and reverse these changes if you wish, although
I suggest you at least leave "Hide extensions for known file types"
unchecked.

Run the printer installation again. When it prompts for the dot4.sys file
point it at the driver.cab file in the C:\WINDOWS\Driver
Cache\i386\driver.cab. The dot4.sys file should show up; select it and
press Enter. If dot4.sys doesn't show up leave the window with the prompt
for dot4.sys open. Open Windows Explorer and open the i386\driver.cab file.
There's a lot of files in there, but one of them should be dot4.sys. Copy
it to some handy place, (e.g. c:\ - root of the C drive). Then, in the
prompt window, key the path to where you copied it (e.g. c:\) and press
Enter.

Printer (driver) installation can be very idiosyncratic, which means giving
exact instructions is difficult without having the same printer and driver.
However, if this post doesn't help, post again and we (I) will dig a bit
deeper.
