In generating a auto TOC, with only heading 1 and heading 2, the dot leaders
are missing for heading 2.

You need to modify the TOC 2 style to add a dot leader. What version of Word
are you using?

If you're in 2003, you need to click on the Format menu and select Styles
and Formatting. The Styles and Formatting task pane will open. Place your
cursor in a level 2 heading in the TOC and use your arrow keys to move the
cursor to a point just left of the page number, so that "TOC 2" appears under
"Formatting of selected text." Right-click on TOC 2 and select Modify. Then
click on Format - Tabs. You'll be able to set a dot-leader tab.

If you're in Word 2007, somebody else will need to answer your question,
because the instructions are different.

I hope this helps.

In 2007, open the Styles & Formatting panel (Ctrl-Alt-Shift-S), click
Options at the lower right. In the Show What? dropdown, click All
Styles. Go back to the S & F panel, scroll to the ToC2 style name
(whatever it happens to be), and right-click on it, and choose Modify.
Then Format > Tabs, select the entry for the one at the right edge,
and click the dot-leader (should be the second choice of leader, after
"None"). Then OK your way out.

(Oh, you'll probably want to turn off Show All Styles!)

Idaho Word Man- it worked!  Thanks so much!

Hi,
When I update a TOC (in Word 2003), dot leaders appear in all headings
other than heading 1, after the section number. i.e.,

1 Introduction
1.1.......Body of report
1.1.1....Discussion
2 Conclusion

When I originally generated the TOC, no dot leaders appear. Does
anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Thanks.

At some point, the "Use dot leader" option got checked for that tab
stop in styles ToC Heading2 and 3 (or whatever they're called in your
document).
