DOS does not 'see' NTFS formatted drives, as XP is usually set up. That is
why when you booted with a floppy you only saw the A:\ drive.

1) Since XP is built on the NT codebase, it is not possible to boot up in
DOS if XP is the OS installed, since there is no DOS to boot into.
2) It sounds like your C: volume is formatted as NTFS. Booting using a DOS
boot disk will not enable you to access your NTFS volume, since DOS does not
recognise NTFS.

Face it: Windows XP is NOT MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME
(all of which are GUI layers on top of MS-DOS). Microsoft branched away
from MS-DOS with NT: No NT iteration (XP is NT 5.1) uses MS-DOS. The sooner
you realize this, the better it will be for you.

If you will explain to us what you REALLY are trying to accomplish, we might
be able to help you, or at least let you know whether it can or cannot be
accomplished under Windows XP.

Please define for us what "bring up explorer in edit" means.
