Since Sunday Morning I've experienced a sort of DoS

when I first turn my machine on or if I've just restarted it I can get out 2
the internet and load a page in IE or download a few messages in Outlook then
after I've received a number a packets it seems like a door closes and I
can't receive anything from the internet until I restart my machine.

This happens weather I start up in safe mode or normally. I disconnected my
router and hooked directly into my cable modem with my eithernet card and
still the same thing. It is not my ISP because I can hook my laptop into the
cable modem and it proceeds normally. I assume there is something in my
registry that watches my incoming on the internet and switches things down
when/after it detects activity.

Does this sound familiar to anyone and more importantly does anyone have any
suggestions on how to address it.

What is the virus/malware status of the computer? If you think it is
clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Yes, I think/thought it is clean.
I use:
Norton Internet Security 2006 -- most recently updated May 20th, most recent
system scans - May 20th and May 23rd
CA Pest Patrol -- most recently updated May 20th, most recent deep scan May
23rd -- lite scans May 20th, 22nd, 23rd
Spybot -- most recently updated May 20th, most recent deep scan May 20th &
May 23rd
Ad-Aware -- most recently updated May 20th, most recent deep scan May 20th &
23rd

until May 22nd I had a routher between the cable modem and my machine --
when Insight thought that the router might be the problem I completly
disconnected it and connected directly to the cable modem.

If you're still having the problem I'd put the router back (hardware firewall
improves security). If you can, visit www.TrendMicro.com and do their free
online scan. Also try AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy. (Both available
from www.download.com )

See if that helps.

Hi Jay,
My Advice to you is to get the Router back and use it to connect to the
internet, read the Documentations came with the router to configure it as
Hardware Firewall, it is the same, when you know there is somebody would like
to enter your House and Steal your Possession, what you do in this case?, you
lock all open Gates and windows to not allow him to get in.
Try to block any ports that can undermine your secuirty.
if you still have the Dos attack after you done your HomeWork, try to
connect behind a proxy server, there are some company can provide you with
that (some free and some will charge you) google for it.
Hope this helps

Nass:

I would like to plug in the router and go thru that to the internet but MY
COMPUTER WILL NOT RECEIVE anything from the internet -- that's the problem
I'm trying to fix.

My DoS is not an overwhelming flood of incoming packets -- it's the complete
shut off of packets coming into my computer. The ultimate firewall [grin].

BTW, the problems is within my computer OS -- my son can hook his laptop
into my cable modem or go thru my router and gets onto the internet with no
problems.

Thanks,

Jay

Hi Jay,
We may Exaggerating the Problem here, How do you know that you have Dos
Attack?.
If your Son can access the Internet Ok then ther is no such an attack!, Did
you check your Network configurations.
Try to monitor your computer by Task Manager and see which Apps is the
Offending and Isolate it.
As *Malke* always say what change in between when it was last working and
after, start with it and try to limit the Cause of the problem.
You may have Corrupt Registery files, winsock corrupted.
For winsock try this link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259/
if the above link did help to narrow the problem.
If you Done a full sys scan or both Mal/Vs then your registry should be
clean from Malicious code.
Try this ccleaner from here:
http://www.ccleaner.com .
Hope this helps

Thanks Nass.

DoS was a theory given to me by Insight BB tech support.

You theory that WinSock had been corrupted either intentionally or
unintentionally by Malware is/was probably closer to the truth.

The last thing I had done Sat was update and run all of my protection SW
which may have caught and eliminate some Malware but left a hole in winsock.

Last night I again ran all of my protection SW -- each at it's most
intensive review.
Ad-aware
Spybot
Pest Patrol
2006 Norton

I then cleaned up & deleted temp files.

After that I defragged the HD and ran ScanDisk.

Then I used NETSH on winsock

Then I hooked my machine up to the cable modem and it worked like a charm.

After I was sure everything was working OK I immediately downloaded the
latest updates for my protection SW [see above].

I then hooked back in my router -- tested that -- and then ran all of my
protection SW again.

So far -- so good. Thanks to you, Malke, & JaimeZX.
