Since i examined the MSCONFIG I I know get a DOS screen on
boot up asking which OS to use XP or safe mode. It
dissapears after a second but why is it appearing?

Many thanks, I am away from my home PC at the moment, it
will be some hours 'till I can try this.....

regards and thanks...

hello Rick,

Here is the boot.ini result

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery
Console" /cmdcons

Is it something to do running the bootsec.dat?

regards and thanks

Hi, Giles.

Run msconfig again. Be sure to check the top button on the General tab -
Normal startup - before you click OK to close msconfig. Msconfig
automatically checks the Selective startup box for you, so that you can do
further troubleshooting.

Hi,

Sure is, it's set to to load the Recovery Console as a secondary option. You
can either remove the entry by editing it out and setting the timeout to 0,
or leave it in place as a precautionary move for use in troubleshooting
future problems.

Thanks Rick, I guess it does no harm to have it there,
just a bit annoying to see a dos type screen at boot up.
As long as it's not doing any harm I will leave this as it
is.

Thanks again. You guys are better support than some help
desks I know...
