I use XP Pro. One of my DOS programs (Lotus123 ver 3.4) refuses to run when
I click its shortcut on the desktop. It just goes to a blank black screen
momentarily then reverts to the desktop.

I tried changing Compatibility settings to no avail. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Get a newer program. Some programs from the DOS era simply will not run in
this environment.

Now, if it used to work, then you need to look at anything that was done to
the system (upgrades, updates) since you last used the Lotus program.

If you cannot get the program to run under a new operating system (why
did you change if this was a critical application?), and if using
compatibility modes don't work, and if there isn't a newer version of
the program available that runs under the new operating system or you
are unwilling to buy it, well, then you cannot run that program under
the new operating system. Look into setting up another partition use to
multiboot DOS or Windows 9x.

I have an even older version (2.4) on my machine and it works fine
*provided* I launch the executable (123.exe) directly from Windows
Explorer. Using a shortcut or the .pif file provided by Lotus doesn't
work for me.

Good luck

I have just loaded my old DOS version of the 'Lotus 123R34' on XP Pro.
It works like a charm.

Most possibly you have moved the 123R34 directory from one place to another.
To fix it, create a 123R34 directory in C drive, and copy all the Lotus programs
with the two directories under 123R34. They are 'ADDINS' and 'WYSIWYG'
directories.

Make sure you have the PATH=C:\123R34; in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file,
Then re-boot your PC.

Now go to the 123R34 directory and click on the 123.EXE program. It
should start properly.

Create a shortcut of the '123.EXE' file on the Screen, and you should be able
to run it now..

Most DOS programs does work on XP Pro., except programs that use unusual
video or audio stuff.

Have fun.

Just a suggestion, someone posted "not me" about a nifty program called DOS BOX and is a free program to run dos based programs on XP. I don't take credit for what i don't accomplish so if i ever remember who posted it before, thank them, not me.
