Have setup a network printer in windows 2k to use a lpt
port and added a "net lptx: \\server\printer so that it
works for dos apps.

My problem is that when ever I set this up on lpt1, I get
"The network path is not found" message when ever I do so a
"dir > lpt1", however, the exact same settings on lpt2 work
fine.

Why does lpt1 give me that error message and is there a fix
for it. I have a dos app which can not be config'd to
print to lpt2, so really need to print to lpt1.

Thanks in advance for any help

Fletch

The NET USE command only works if the spoler into the printer driver is not
disabled (not set to "Send directly to the Printer").
If this is not your case, check if the current user do have Administrator
rights (it's mandatory if the LPT1: port physically exists on your hardware)

In a roundabout way u'r post helpped me, thanks. Print
directly to the printer was not set, but u'r spelling
mistake with spoler prompted me to select pooling on the
ports tab, which then allowed me to select both lpt1, and
lpt2 ports. This fixed the problem and I can now do a "dir
lpt1" and it doesn't complain and does print. Its not
the best solution I could hope for but atlest it works.

Now I really want to know is why a "dir > lpt1" doesn't
print immediatly like it use to. Through my playing, I
removed the lpt port from the bios and deleted it from the
hardware manager, and then added it back. Since then, dos
print jobs don't print immediatly, and are spooled then
printed all on a page one after sending a test page to the
printer or word document. Have tried reinstalling the
printer but that didn't fix it. Have tried changing the
options around spooling and immediate printing, but that
hasn't worked either.

Any ideas?

If your app. is printing to LPT1 I cannot see why pooling it with LPT2 could
be of any help.
Maybe you are NETUSing LPT2 when printing to LPT1 ? (if so, it seems to me a
little tricky)

Perhaps Windows first tries to print to LPT1, then to LPT2 (because it finds
LPT1 unavailable), then routes the job to the network printer, but I cannot
say it for sure without knowing the details of your configuration.

Davide.
