i have an old ms-dos game installed - starcon2. The only
way i can run the game is if i insert the line /s:silent
in it's cmd line, to silence all game sounds. If i don't
type it in, the first instance in the game when a sound
is made, the game stops responding. I really want some
sound though, and i can't get it to work. Does anyone
know what's causing it at least?

Hi runnerdude,

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, including VDMSound
which may be what you need see: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and: http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm :-)

There are two solutions that work well.

Get GUSEmu (Gravis UltraSound Emulator), found here:
http://www.deinmeister.de/gusemu/
This program emulates a GUS sound card, which this game
supported very well. GUSEmu runs as a background utility,
so you execute DOS programs through PIF profiles.

The alternate is to get the open source rework of "Star
Control II" called "The Ur-Quan Masters". This works even
better as it combines (if you get all the data files) the
graphics and speech from the 3DO version with the MOD
music and text from the DOS version.
Go to http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ for the goods.
