WE PURCHASED THIS LAPTOP TO RUN A DOS BASE ACCOUNTING AND
DATA BASE PROGRAM WE HAD WRITTEN FOR OUR FUNERAL HOME
($$$$$). WE NEED THE NEWER SYSTEM FOR OTHER PARTS OF THE
BUSINESS BUT CAN NOT CHANGE THIS PROGRAM. I MUST BE ABLE
TO RUN THIS UNDER XP WITHOUT ANY LOCKUPS OR PROBLEMS. I
INSTALLED XP AND FULLY UPDATED IT THROUGH MICROSOFT. THEY
TELL ME MY SUPPORT FOR XP IS TO COME FROM YOU AT COMPAQ.
WHEN I RUN MY PROGRAM (FHS) IT STARTS OK BUT WILL EITHER
LOCKS UP OR WHEN I TRY TO EXIT THE PROGRAM IT FREEZES AND
I MUST DO AN END TASK TO GET OUT. MY FEAR IS THAT THIS
WILL CORRUPT MY DATA. I HAVE PLAYED WITH THE COMPATABILITY
MODES AND THIS WILL NOT FIX ANYTHING. PS THE PROGRAM RUNS
FINE WITHOUT ANY TROUBLE IN SAFE MODE. I HAVE EVEN TRIED A
CLEAN BOOT OF XP TO SEE IF THAT WOULD SOLVE MY TROUBLE.
PLEASE HELP ME, BARRY SOMMERVILLE

Please don't yell at us. We can hear you if you type normally, in
mixed case.

You say "must," but you need to be aware that not all DOS
programs can run under under XP. Although many can, some can not.

"YOU AT COMPAQ"? I'm not sure who you think you're talking to,
but it's not Compaq. This is a Windows XP peer support newsgroup.

WHEN I RUN MY PROGRAM (FHS) IT STARTS OK BUT WILL EITHER
LOCKS UP OR WHEN I TRY TO EXIT THE PROGRAM IT FREEZES AND

Are you able to save the data before you try to exit? If so, the
end task should not corrupt the data.

MODES AND THIS WILL NOT FIX ANYTHING. PS THE PROGRAM RUNS
FINE WITHOUT ANY TROUBLE IN SAFE MODE.

If you have to run the program, running it in safe mode may be
your best choice.

The problem with trying to help you is that none of us knows
anything about a program that you had custom written. Once again,
not all DOS programs will run in XP.
