Doom3 on an old AIW8500DV

Is anyone running this successfully? By that I mean without locking the
machine up, performance is an issue I'll come to if I can get the thing
running for any length of time.

If you do have a stable system I'd love to know what OS / Catalyst / DirectX
you're using. I'm on 2000 and have tried a variety of drivers up to 4.8 (I
can't get 4.9 to install) and DirectX 9b and 9c. Underclocking the card
seems to increase the time between lockups, but even so it's unplayable
really.

And no, I'm not interested in a discussion about upgrading right now.

======================================

Got it running on my 8500DV fine but just barely fast enough to enjoy it.
No issues but game isn't that great IMHO though. Way too dark even with
gamma adjustment in the ini file. Finished it last night. I deleted it and
went back to Farcry, UT and Vietcong for my enjoyment.

Used Cat 4.8 but have Cat beta 4.9 Ogl DLL file in D3's root directory.
Game set at low detail 1024x768. Also make sure that ATi cntrl panel has
"fast" options set.

AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.67GHz)
ECS Elitegroup K7S5A v.3.1 Mainboard (SiS735 Chip Set)
640 Megs of PC2100 266MHz DDR SDRAM.
ATi AIW Radeon 8500DV 64 Megs
Onboard SiS900 NIC
Onboard C-Media CMI 9738 Sound
One 20 Gig Maxtor
One 40 Gig Maxtor
One 80 Gig Maxtor
One Toshiba model SD-R5002 IDE DVD-R/-RW Drive
Broadband cable on Linksys BEFSR41 Router
Microsoft Windows XP Professional w/SP1
Latest Dirx
No overclocking.

Hope that helps.

I've often said of the "X-files" effect: the US is the most technologically
advanced nation on the planet, and yet they can't make a decent torch?!
Incidentally, try the rage3d tweak utility from www.rage3d.com for the
ability to tweak the brightness on the fly.

You mean the performance slider in the control panel? Yep, got that. What's
the filename of the OpenGL DLL... I can see an ATIOGLXX.DLL. Ha, this is
funny...

Expanding atioglxx.dl_ to atioglxx.dll.
atioglxx.dl_: 2991806 bytes expanded to 6508544 bytes, 117% increase.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah that's the one. I already have it expanded if you want me to email it
too you before I delete it.

Is that an Nforce chipset on the Asus? What sound card are you using?

It's encouraging that someone has got it to run!

I think that if you solve the problem getting the 4.9 drivers to install,
then you will have solved the problem getting Doom 3 to run. Try running a
driver cleaner to get rid of all of the old ATI drivers and their files on
your system and set your card up as a standard SVGA video card. Once you
have done that, and rebooted, and ensured that the video card is still seen
as an SVGA card, install the cat 4.9 drivers. It should go with no
problems. The 4.9 drivers are simply the standard 4.7 drivers with a hotfix
included for Doom 3. There is nothing wonky or terribly different about
them.
