Doom 3 stress?

Well, Carmack said it would stress things we didn't know we had. My
9600XT with Arctic Cooler was dead this morning after a 2 hour session
of Doom 3 last night. Coincidence, probably, huh?

Replaced it with a spare 9600SE, (gag, choke). At least I didn't have to
replace the drivers.

Hmm. I'll let you know when the price of Doom3 comes
down to about $25. Think I would be less than happy
if a game was calculated to sack a $150 card. Do those
cards not have some kind of built-in overheat detection?

Yes, but it can be dissabled

There shouldn't be anything Doom 3 could do, to over stress your video card.
Possibly your card's cooling fan is clogged with dust, or failed completely?

Well well, now we can sit and wait for those new kind of
"Vidcard Killer"-viruses too (besides of Doom3)?
Perhaps every component in my PC has got some unused
features too that will destroy them if used...
Carmack, what have you done.

No, checked and double-checked everything this morning before the
drastic replacement. Fan works fine. The card handled everything I've
thrown at it, including Far Cry. Doom seemed to give it no trouble, no
"sparkles" like I've read about here. No signs of overheat by sight or
smell. Haven't disabled any overheat function.

Maybe it was teetering on the edge and last night pushed it over, who knows?

Maybe it's still covered under the warranty? I don;t even remember how long
it is on ati cards...

I assume the warranty might be void because the HSF was replaced with the
arctic cooler.

built by ATI 3 years warranty

Hell, like graphic cads even have a practical life of 3 years anymore.

I find myself upgrading every 2 years or so, myself.

voodoo3--->aiw 8400----->aiw 9600xt

Thanks, guys. It's a Sapphire card and Sapphire refers me to ATI, while
ATI refers me to Sapphire. What a rip.

Thankfully, I've only had it a couple months and Newegg RMA'd it for me.

Yesterday I booted my computer, keyboard
port was *dead*. What are the odds of that?
I could boot ino windows, do anything I want,
as long as I didn't have to input keyboard data.
Coincidence? Sometimes stuff just dies.....

Had that problem once. Turned out I was overloading my power supply at
boot. Bigger one fixed it.
