Now it has occured to me that many questions are asked over and over again.
It will most likely get worse once Vista is realease! Wouldn't it be a great
idea if some person assembled all the FAQ, posted them in an easy to find
place and supplied a link to all the people who can work a computer but are
not techically literate? You know displayed the link where everyone could
find it rather than searching and searching and searching.

The big hurdle is internet access and you have that one conquered.

Use Vista or XP Help.

Use http://support.microsoft.com

Use google or it's new off spring

http://www.searchmash.com

Windows Vista Help (also included on the Start Menu in Vista)
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/default.mspx

Vista Tips and Tricks

Google for Ed Bott's Windows Blog and Ed Bott's ZD Net blog.

If someone listed "all the FAQ" you'd still take as much time searching them
unless they had a decent searh and MSFT hasn't achieved that on their
website and for the MSKBs as of this writing. If you use google and a few
selected Vista sites, and the Help in Vista you can nail your answers.

Several MVP"s have just such websites for Vista. Their links are in their
sigs. They post regularly here. I'm sure they will reply here also. The
problem is that a newsgroup scrolls quickly and there is no way to pin a
list at the top.

Apparently, Robert Armand Hammer has found one :-)

Why do you constantly feel the need to alter the Original Poster's headers?

Almost every time you answer a post you have to add a puerile comment to the
header.

As in this thread, we don't need to read that you are passing on a tip in
the header as that is presumably the whole point of your post.

Be a good chap and desist. Thank you.

It makes him feel big and clever

Chad,

Very much I appreciate your concise informative Post, and especially the
valuable URLs

Who cares? I see nothing wrong with changing the header if the body
reflects it.

It gives a hint of another answer and a sometimes a short preview of the
writers intent. I do it alot.
Why not change the header to show that your reply is different? Not that
big a deal, I am suprised that you even commented on it.

I put this reply to the wrong person. It should have been under Mr. Hacker.
See what the subject does, it gives you a little preview, that way you can
decide to view or not view it, depending on the subject. Saves time.

But if somebody would collect links and post his/her link collection -
or a link to his/her website with such a collection - regularly, say
once in a fortnight, to this group...

I'm just curious. How long have you been on Usenet? Periodic posting of
FAQs in newsgroups and mailing lists is pretty common (although not as
much as it used to be).

Mr.Hacker--

Drop the "we" from what you think other people need to read. Don't click the
mouse if you don't want to read it. Think TV remote--atta boy.

Full time job for you figuring out what Mark Rae thinks. Focus on that.
It's the job of a life time. A search for Mark Rae help here comes up zero.

Thanks Colin--

That was generally the motivation. I thought it would give people the
opportunity to know what the body would have in it and save them time.

Several years. We still post a FAQ once a week in the virtualpc ng, but
that works better because there are not nearly as many new threads.
Jonathan Maltz maintains the FAQ and set it up as an autopost (or whatever
its called). This ng gets so many new threads that you could set the
autoposter for two hour intervals and still not keep up, especially starting
in Feb when this ng gets to be really busy, like windowsxp.general is today.
It is just a fact of life that most folks never scroll down before posting
and so just don't see a FAQ. Heck, a lot don't even read the headers that
they CAN see.

The number of posts in vista.general is now getting close to those in
windowsxp.general. The number there seems to have declined from it's peak
in excess of 1000 a day. More of the posts in this vista group seem to be
rants and off topic discussions than in the xp group - which gets it's share
of those too.

Just my opinion on "More of the posts in this vista group seem to be
rants and off topic discussions than in the xp group - which gets it's share
of those too." At this point there is a lot of boredom because the public
release isn't until next week. After release the type of posts with
questions should increase greatly. Have a great day.
