I recently tried to fix my Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop and in doing so I installed Windows XP Home when it was running Windows XP Professional. The only option I had was to delete all the old information. We thought we had the restore disks but we can't find them anywhere. Now it doesn't recognize hardly any of my utilities/drivers. When it boots up it asks if we want to start up Home or Professional version. If we select Professional it says it is shutting down to prevent damage. Is there any way to fix this??? Any help is appreciated!

It will start up but the screen size is about half of what it should be. It won't let me change it in the display settings or anything. It doesn't recognize the modem or anything as far as I can tell.

Can you not get copy of XP Home from someone & use your laptops product key, that way you can re-build it.
Otherwise see if you can get into it using "Safe Mode" to see if you can sort out the problem.

I have the XP Home disk. It had Professional on it before though. Is that the disk that I need to try and get ahold of? What do I need to do in "Safe Mode"? I don't know what drivers I need and stuff like that.

If you put in the XP Home cd in you could the use system restore or repair.
To do this you would need to make sure your cd drive was set up in the BIOS for 1st boot.

How do I know if it was installed in BIOS the first time? By the way, thank you for trying to help me so much!
