General rule of thumb:

Getting hardware drivers from the Microsoft web site *is* a crap shoot.
Usually by the time they are approved and put there - they are older than
what you would find from the manufacturer's web site. My recommendation
is - unless you have Microsoft hardware - do not visit the Windows Update
hardware drivers section - ignore it - pretend it does not exist. In fact -
even if you have Microsoft hardware - go directly to its support web page
for your drivers.

In other words - Microsoft did not create the hardware you are getting
the support for - why would you get the support for said hardware from
them?

You could argue that you are getting support for the Operating
System - but the fact is, you are not. Yes - you needed the (in this case)
video card in order to utilize the OS in question (well - to see it.)
That is no reason to trust that the driver the original manufacturer of
said video card submitted to Microsoft, paid for the right to have it
tested and 'logo' approved and placed on the Microsoft Updates site
is going to be better than the one the original manufacturer put out
AFTER that - many times it is MANY new updates after that driver was
released. It takes time to 'test' and go through the 'red tape' that
gets it put on the update site - and by that time - it is possible the
original manufacturer has found issues with the driver they submitted
and replaced it several times over. They likely just don't want to pay
and play the waiting game again - so they don't.

A crusading noob that feels compelled to MULTI-POST his ignorance.

Not necessarily! Many people were burned by getting driver updates from
Microsoft instead of manufacturer.
