Hi,
I need to format my domain controller and start over. Whats the best way to
do this, and keep my Active directory settings? I also have a backup domain
controller, which IS win2k. Any suggestions

thank you

What type of AD settings are you referring to? When you rebuild the server
and promote it, a copy of the directory will be replicated to it from your
other DC. You will have all of the objects that you had before.

Yes, this is what i thought would happen, just wanted to make sure i wasn't
misinformed about this.

But when i format the domain controller, do i need to remove it from being a
domain controller or anything at all, or just shut it off, format, promote
it to domain controller and wait for it to get the settings from the backup
domain controller?

You will need to demote the DC by running dcpromo.exe to correctly remove it
from teh domain.

Howdy!

In addition to what Time stated, please be aware of any
FSMO Roles that this DC might hold. There are five in
total. The FSMO Roles that this DC might hold would need
to be transfered to the other, remaining DC. Also, you
might want to "undo" it as a Global Catalog Server and
make sure that the other, remaining DC is made a DC (
which will not require a restart - UNLESS you have an
Exchagne Server / Outlook Clients. Then you should
restart that DC/GC!!! ). Also, do not forget about DNS
and DHCP - should that DC perform these services!

Er, maybe I need to clarify a statement I made above.
Making a DC a Global Catalog Server may not require a
restart but it sure is a good thing to do - Exchange /
Outlook clients not withstanding!
