Domestic license and key compatibility with foreign versions

I'm not sure where or who I should be directing this question at but I
thought I would give this forum a try.

I have the Japanese version of Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade
I'm upgrading from Windows 2000 so it forces me to a custom installation and
I can no longer use my upgrade key. I know I must "Purchase a Full Product
License". My question is this:

Can I use the license/key from an English version of Windows Vista Home
Basic Full with my installation?

I'd like to know if I can just waltz down to my nearest electronics store,
pick up a copy of the full version instead of having to purchase online. =)

Hi,

Versions are generally language specific, and Product Keys for one language
cannot be used in another. Basically, your Product key needs to match the
installation media that you plan on using.
