Can I up a domain server (different domain name) that was
on a test LAN unto the real LAN with the real domain in
existence.

Yes.

Run dcpromo to remove AD,(removes user accounts) then add the server to the
new domain as a member server then run dcpromo again.

What if I don't want to demote the test server? What will
happen if I don't demote the test server?

Thanks,

It will still remain in it's own domain.

You will have 2 domains running on the same wire. One domain with just the
DC and a second domain (the domain you want to add the DC to.)

A DC can not be in two domains at the same time. To add a DC to another
domain you first have to remove it from the domain it is in.(by running
dcpromo and loose all user accounts) then add the server to the new domain
and run dcpromo (picks up the new user info from the first DC) to make it a
DC in the new domain.

Not sure of what you want your final outcome to be, but if you don't want to
remove AD from the server you will have 2 separate domains You can create a
trust between the two domains if necessary.

Thanks for your help. I should have stated earlier that I
am really not trying to accomplish anything by doing
this. I just want to boot this test server up on the LAN.
I not trying to make it part of the domain or to interact
with the domain in any way. It is a temporary thing. I
just wanted to make sure that nothing bad would happen if
I boot this domain server up on our existing LAN/Domain.

As long as it is in a separate domain it will not affect your existing
domain. You can run the two domains on the same wire with little (network
traffic) impact on your existing domain.

In fact MS suggest doing this to run the ADMT.

You are good to go.
