Greetings,

Wonder can someone explain the difference between Domain and Workgroup
please.

I have 3 PC's (Me/Wife/Son) networked via a Hub, all I ever see is that
they are connected to the same workgroup. However I see a lot of chat
about connecting to domains on this group.

Have I missed the plot?
One XP Pro and 2 XP home. 100Meg NIC's, XP pro has the internet access
which the others can use. Works fine, but just need to know?

For example should I really have a domain?

Cheers
Kevin

You can't have a domain, Kevin -- that requires a computer running a
"server" operating system to act as a domain controller. Windows XP
Home and Pro are "client" operating systems.

Domains are commonly used in large corporate networks. They allow
centralized user account administration, storage of user files on a
server computer, fine control over what each user and computer is
allowed to do, and other features that aren't needed for a typical
home network.

What is the difference between Workgroups and Domains?
Does a Domain have any advantages?

Weren't you paying attention to Steve's comments?

In short:
Domain - secure environment, able to provide precise security rules on a
computer or user basis.

Workgroup - none of the above. Nothing more than offering an easy way to
find computers on the network.
