Hi,

Just a question. Is there any difference between a domain name
"domain" with "domain.local"?

Thank You,

As boolean search of the Microsoft Knowledge Base for:
single and label and domain and name
yields:

Hi Jerold,

Thank you for the microsoft links.. it really helps me alot..

Can the single label domain name be ressolve by windows 2003
server?

I'm having hard time configuring windows 2000 advanced server to work
in our current network setup with single label domain name.

we have 300 workstation and 2 servers... all workstations are running
in windows 2000 professional with SP4 installed. The servers are
running in NT 4.0 enterprise. I know that the single label domain name
can caused many problems in the future.. but with our current set-up we
can't afford to change the domain name now..can you give me a step by
step procedure for domain migration... i know it sounds too much but it
will save many lives :D .. thank you!

It is not recommended to use single label DNS domain in AD, as some of the
KB articles pointed out. Perhaps you wish to review the design specifications
and requirements?

Note that the leftmost suffix will be automatically proposed as the NetBIOS
name when you run dcpromo e.g. myname.company.com = myname (NetBIOS).

NT machines will have no problem using this to locate resources and vice
versa, although NT uses WINS which has to be factored into the infrastructure
setup as well (if not already included).

Make sure that DNS entries for the NT servers are manually added to enable
Win 2000 clients to locate them.

Do let us know if this helps. Thanks!

okay..now i understand.. just few more question if you allow me..

1. if i'm going to change the domain name to a fully qualified domai
name, do i have to set-up again to trust relationship to other domai
and re-joined all 300 computers in the new domain? how about th
profile?

2. our domain name (mycompany) is different from the registered name i
the internet (ecompany.com) and the DNS is running in the linux box.. d
i need to setup another DNS in windows 2000 advanced server?

WINS is running in the PDC (NT server) ...

it would be hard for us to change the name, as of the moment because o
our trust relationship with other domain.

please advise....

thank you very much!
