I have 2 companies in a single forest, say ABC.com and XYZ.com. I want to
have another company/domain join our domain, say LMN.com. Presently,
LMN.com has there own Exchange 2K server and many users.

Is the only way to do this, on the LMN domain, run DCpromo on the DCs to
remove it from the existing domain, then when there are no DCs, rerun
DCpromo and join an existing domain ABC.com or XYZ.com.?

If I do this, will lose the original user account, permissions on the files,
and will I have problems with Exchange Server.?

Any sugestions...?

PS All servers are Win2K SP 4 servers.

Thanks,

Tom...

This is more of an AD design question.

If you demote the current lmd.com domain, yes, all is lost, including users,
groups, and especially email.

In a nutshell, you can use LDIFDE or CSVDE and export the user accounts, and
then after editing the file to remove reference to mailboxes, and other
specific info (all you really need is a few entries), then import them into
your new lmd.com tree that you've already added to your existing forest,
assuming its abc.com. Be sure to leave the old DC to the other domain on a
segregated LAN as to not interfere with names on the current production
network while doing this. Once you've setup AD and make sure its running
smoothly, then you can run /domainprep on the new domain. You can then use
Exmerge to pump out the mailboxes into psts from the old Exchange org and
then import them into your current production Exchange organization.

That pretty much sums it up. If you need more info, let me know and can be
more specific about the process.
