Q

I have a server set up on the network with Win2K Small
Business Server, Active Directory, etc.

When I try to connect my wireless laptop to it, I am able
to change to the appropriate domain with the Administrator
account. I am told that I was successfully able to join
the domain. However, when I reboot the laptop and try to
log in to the domain there is a long pause before I am
finally told that "The system could not log you on now
because the domain is not available".

What am I missing?

Have you hardcoded the DNS settings on the laptop, or allowed them to be set
with DHCP?

I think you'll find your answer lies with the DNS settings on your laptop.
They don't point to an ISP's name server, do they? The only DNS server
listed should be the DNS server containing your Active Directory DNS.

Cheers

Q,

Usually a wireless router hands out its own IP range and segregates itself
from your wired network to mitigate the risk of external access to your
private network. You'll need to think very hard about this and the security
you have in place -- as well as the potential risk if your network were
compromised. Remember, even 128 bit WEP takes only about 2 hours to
penetrate.

Look at your Access Point settings and either create a NAT to your server
with MAC authentication, implement IPSEC or some other tunnel, or add your
wireless connections to your internal network with WEP and hope for the
best.

In a business or sensitive situation, I would never consider an option with
less security than PEAP or EAP-TLS. The implementation takes time and
planning, so if this is the case, slow down and do it right the first time.
