domain resolution problems after old pdc removed.

I preformed an upgrade on my pdc(nt4) to server 2003,
then performed new installation on a different machine
and made it a domain controller for the same active
directory domain and then took the old pdc down. Now I
cannot add nt4 machines to the domain. The symptom is
that it says it can't find the domain. nbtstat -C shows
that the domain name service 0x1C is 0.0.0.0 with 600
second ttl. Obviously something is horked up. I went to
the dns server and the active directory entries. The old
dc was all over the place in there. I removed it from a
couple of places and then saw a place under gc where the
new domain controller wasn't even listed. I suspect that
I have made some horrible error in taking that machine
off the network. But it is gone for good so any help
would be appreciated.

need to make sure the new server is a GC. do this in sites and services.
Also make sure the the new server holds all 5 FSMO roles and that it is a
DNS server.
