Domain Renaming

Need to change domain name of AD due to global expansion. Been doing some
research and I think I got it right, just need to make sure.
1. We're running Win 2000 in Native Mode
2. Exchange 2000

What needs to be done:
1. Create new AD server with new AD name.
2. Export all users from old domain using LDIDE, using Notepad change all
relevance to old domain name to new name. Using this new file import data in
new AD and all users/computer will come across. No passwords will come across
- looks like have to manually create passwords again.
3. New Exchange Server will need to be built with new name and using
Exchange migration tool migrate all mailboxes onto new Exchange server.
4. Through GPO change where users get mail from - show new Exchange server.
5. Demote all DC's to member servers and rejoin new domain and then promote
to DC's. All member servers just rejoin new domain.
6. All user are running roaming profiles - what's the easiest way to make
all uses join new domain when they logon to their pc the day after change and
what about laptop users who work from home and connect via VPN?

If I've got anything wrong or somebody has a better idea please let me know.
Thanks
Reg

Don't do it?

1) Add a new domains to the forest? Or new forest with any
needed external trusts?

2) Move to Win2003 (and Win2003 Forest Functional Level)
and change the domain name perhaps?

Thanks for reply Herb, why not?
If I do a new forest with trusts, I don't want to add a new exchange server
in that forest, can the new forest get all mail from the exchange server
because I'm going to just add the new address to exchange?
The company wont spend the money to go to Win2003 even though it has the
functunailty to change domain names.

I don't understand the above completely but Exchange
can receive mail for multiple email domains/zones.

The AD domain does not have to be the same as the
email domain/zone. There are mappings but I am
no Exchange expert.
