Domain not available

I keep getting a "domain not available" message when I try
to log on a student on our new school network. I've not
set a specific time schedule under the Logon Hours
settings that student users can log onto the network but
the server's settings seem to be acting as if I've set
this some way. I've checked the users in AD Users and
Computers but the entire week is blocked out in blue
indicating that they can log on at any time. I can logon
as Administrator at any time, however.

One thing I've considered was the fact that I set the
licensing to "per server" so that, as I understand it, no
more than the specified number of users can be logged on
depending on how many licenses are set on the DC. There
are, currently, more users in the AD Users and Computers
than I have licenses, more licenses are on the way, but
this occurred after school was out and very few other
users were logged onto the domain.

I've never really received this notice before, much more
often it's the user name or password is mistyped. This is
a new one on me.

The student workstations are all XP Pro, sp1a and the
server is running W2K, sp4.

Thanks in advance.

Does the ipconfig/all from the XP show that everything is pointing to the
server-IP? Is the Firewall turned off on the XP?
Sure that you're not log on locally?

Well, I finally had time to get back to these computers
and found that I didn't set the DC IP address in the DNS
settings. One of the workstations did have the firewall
checked also. I didn't have time to check on the student
logons but the teacher said she'd do it tomorrow when she
gets in. It's a wonder any of them logged on at all -
including the administrator account. Perhaps that's why
these workstations take so long to come up - do ya think?

I guess I must have run across one of those burned spots
in my brain when I joined these workstations to the domain
and all the rest. If I find that the problem persists
I'll post again tomorrow.

Thank you Marina.

Hi Dana,

That could indeed be the problem. XP relies on DNS totally and should always
point to the server-IP.

Thanks for reporting back.

Ok, I've just had a report from another teacher that said
she was able to log on successfully and the group policies
I'd set, reportedly, seem to be working as well. Hey, I'm
amazed!

Sorry, I'm spread a little thin here. You've been a BIG
help.

Hi Dana,

Great! Glad you got it solved.
Thanks for reporting back again.

Have a nice weekend!
