I have a laptop that is unable to login when not attached
to the network.

THe endu-user states they've added no software of any
kind, yet when they are unpluggedfrom the netwrok they get
the following error.
"the system cannot log you on now because the domain is
not available."

I've searched Microsoft's pages and found nothihg useful.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi

This is the message you get if cached credentials logon is
disabled.

Cached credentials logon is disabled if the registry setting
CachedLogonsCount is set to 0:

Cached Logon Information
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;172931

Note that the CachedLogonsCount is a number indicating for how many
users the computer should remember cached credentials for, and not
how many times a user can logo on with cached credentials in a row.

Unfortunately I've already checked the cachedlogin and it
is at the default setting of 10.

Any other ideas maybe?

How about client's DNS? Does it point to AD DNS or somewhere else (e.g. ISP
DNS)? Check and set it to point to AD DNS.

The DNS settings as with the TCP/IP settings are set to
optaind automatically from the PDC.

Hi Kathy,
At the logon screen check that the "Log on to" box
displays the name the computer belongs to with "this
computer" in brackets i.e Dscott123(this computer). The
Log on to box is probably displaying the Domain name which
you are not plugged into. Use the username and password
that was assigned to the computer when windows was first
installed in order to log on in the computer.
