Hi,

I am a bit confused about the naming convention of
domains.

Question:
a) I create a top-level domain in a new w2k
forest 'example.com'.
Which is the root domain? example or com?
b)Can a subdomain name have a period? e.g. "subdomain.a"
resp. "subdomain.a.example.com"?

Thanks, Dani

In Win2000 terms, example.com. is the root domain (presumably you have no
com.)

In PURE DNS terms the root is name "." (pronounced "dot")
The DNS namespace root is NOT the same as the Active Directory Forest root.
In DNS the domain name is the WHOLE name (technically with a "." on the end,
e.g., domain.com. <--dot there)
b)Can a subdomain name have a period? e.g. "subdomain.a"
resp. "subdomain.a.example.com"?

Normally that would be domains:
example.com
(its child) a.example.com
(& its child) subdomain.a.example.com

Were you to actually skip a.example.com, you would have created a NEW TREE
because the subdomain.a.examplecom is not a direct child of an existing
domain.
(Don't do that, is probably the best advice.)
