I have attempted to upgrade my Windows NT network PDC
to a Windows 2000 domain controller. But during the
Active Directpry Installation, I am unable to configure
with my existing NT domain name I am prompted to set up a
new domain or join an exiting domain. I tried both
options and I was eventually forced to create a new
domain name( i.e test.com) that is different from my NT
domain. How can I avoid this and still keep my old NT
domain name. What is the need for this new windows 2000
domain name. I read that its different from an Internet
domain. Pls help!

During the upgrade will you have to choose a DNS domain name and a netbios
domain name. By default your netbios domain name will be the same as the NT
4 domain name and you will not have the option to change it. Your pre
windows 2000 domain should be the same. You can verify this by opening AD
users and computers, right click the domain and select properties. You will
see a box for your pre-windows2000 domain name and it should match the old
NT domain. If you are creating a new domain then you will have the option
to choose the DNS name and netbios name.
