I have a home LAN consisting of a router and two computers,
one running WinXP and the other Win2K. One is named Dell,
the other HP7950.

Occasionally, when I try to log in HP7950, the computer
could take a long time "preparing for network connection".
After entering username and password, I get this error
message saying "The system cannot log you on now because the
domain HP7950 is not available."

What is it talking about? I never set up a domain and I
don't have a domain name server.

If I then restart the computer, it'll go through another
long section for "preparing network connection". And then,
it will work fine. It seems to me the computer switches
between two different states. What's going on?

Right Click My computer->properties->Network Identification.
What does it show, workgroup or domain?

workgroup.

Check the Event logs for any errors regarding workgroup or
Netlogon service. Post any errors here.

One possibility is that your Netlogon service might be set to
Automatic. In a workgroup environment, there is no need of this service.
Set the startup type of this service to Disabled from Administrative tools.
