Domain controller demotion

I have a server that sees itself as a domain controller.
In active directory on any other dc, it does not show up
as a domain controller. I need to get this server
demoted, so i can properly promote it to a dc that can be
seen in active directory. When i run dcpromo it says it
can't find any server with it's computer account. so
dcpromo fails to demote. Any suggestions?

If you have at least SP3 or is it SP4, you can do DCPromo /forceremoval
(sp?)

They added the DCPromo switch in a later service pack.
