If I wanted to setup a couple locations with only a few
users to authenticate to the Corporate site's DC, is
there a way to make sure that they can access files on a
server located on there local subnet? Is a DC really
necessary on every site (physically detached subnet)?
What if the link between the Corporate site and the
authenticating location goes down? Anybody have
experience with this type of setup? Thanks.

A DC in every site is recommended. Users shouldnt have
to auth across the WAN.. they should hit the DC in their
site. If the link to the corp site goes down.. AD has
replicated to the remote site. If there are only a few
users, install a DC/File server with backup in each site.
