OK, after logging onto a Windows 2000 WS with domain
administrator credentials, explorer does not launch. The
logon seems to work fine, the comforting little MS logon
jingle plays as expected, but after that nothing happens.
All you get is a blue screen (not the dead computer blue
screen, just the MS desktop blue) and the mouse cursor,
which moves around like it should.
1.) No combination of keystrokes can bring about any
change in this odd limbo status: Ctl-Alt-Del does nothing,
the Windows key does nothing, the function keys do nothing.
2.) All other accounts, local or domain, work fine
including local admin accounts.
3.) We have 2 other machines identical to the problem
machine on the domain running more or less the same
software, SP4 and the same suite of security patches that
run smoothly under the domain admin account.
4.) It's possible to run applications & applets as domain
administrator using the shift-right-click "run as" feature
under any other account.
5.)The only way to resurrect the OS is to cold reboot with
the reset switch.
I have done a bit of MS KB surfing, but could find no
mention of a similar problem. My first thought was that
the domain admin registry hive was not loading properly
for whatever reason, but alas, I don't understand the
registry well enough to say for certain.
Any thoughts, I'm all ears.
