Doing research for a AMD-64 system

I'm looking for info on putting together an AMD-64 system.

On the AMD web site, I notice there are two types or models of processors.
Which one is best of a home desktop system and what ASUS motherboard
would you recommend. I noticed AMD recommends the A8V board.

Any suggestions on other components is appreciated.

When I get around to it, I'm gonna get an nForce4 with socket 939.

I'll likely get the A8N-Sli Deluxe, been very pleased with my A7N8X Deluxe.

I second that.

Recently I have helped a relative to build a socket 754, nForce3
motherboard K8N, with AMD 64 2800+, which is fast and stable.
Would love to try socket 939, nForce4 mobo.

There are three major types of AMD64 processors:
Socket 754 ==> Athlon64 and Sempron
Socket 939 ==> Athlon64 and Athlon FX
Socket 940 ==> Opteron

Within the Opteron family there are three major sub-categories:
Opteron 1xx : for uniprocessor systems
Opteron 2xx : for systems with 1 or 2 processors
Opteron 8xx : for systems with 1 to 8 processors

You could nitpick that there is also a Socket 940 version of the
Athlon FX, but it is really just a renamed Opteron 1xx.

And then a lot of people would argue that for everything I listed
above, there should be subcategories for 130 nm and 90 nm. You
can also further subdivide the Athlon 64 categories according to
whether a chip has 1 MB of L2 or only 512 KB.

In the middle of the year we'll start seeing another major
category: dual-core Opterons. At some indefinite time after
that we'll see dual-core chips for Socket 939.

I've not heard anything definitive about the socket 939 dual cores recently,
know of anything?

Shows dual core "Toledo" for H2, 2005 for the "desktop".

It doesn't specifically mention Socket 939, but AMD has already
effectively abandoned development for Socket 754 so Socket 939 is
left over by elimination. Unless, of course, Socket 1270 has
been bumped up from 2006 to this year.

I've heard conflicting reports about whether or not it will support
- DDR2
- DDR and DDR2
- DDR

Most speculation I've seen ignores the DDR-only possibility.

Went looking for wherever I first heard about "socket 1270".

Couldn't find anything much. Had better luck searching for
(AMD and K10) - but it is all still just speculation, such as:

This comment suggests that maybe I had a dyslexic moment and used
1270 when I should have used 1207:

Found one comment in that thread the name of that socket type
will be "M2".

Restarting the search but looking for "Socket 1207" produces an
Inquirer result:

Continuing my research, I notice one of my favorite online dealers has the
following bundle:

ASUS A8V-Deluxe, with AMD64 3200+ for $316, including FREE 2nd day air
shipping.
Only a few dollars more for the A8V-E board.

Any comments on the above package??

If I get the E version of this board, will I be able to use standard PCI
cards?
