Doesn't recognize blank cd-

I'm trying to write files (pictures) to a cd using Windows Explorer. I know
the data will fit and I know the cd is empty, but I keep receiving one of two
error messages.

The first comes when I put the cd in - it simply doesn't recognize that
there's anything in the drive, when I can go to Explorer and it's listed
there.

Second, if it recognizes the blank cd and begins copying images to it, it
stops before the actual burning process and tells me there was a problem and
that the cd may not be usable. I have ruined about 6 CD-R's this way, and I'm
becoming very frustrated. I've rebooted, I've made sure that the files will
fit... I don't know what else to do.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks!

CD-Rs were mainly designed for storing music/audio files, not pictures/photos.
CD-RWs which can be formatted (packet writing), are better suited for
storing photos, documents and even music files. It can be formatted
using Nero or Roxio and will then be like a 650Mb removable harddrive.
You can then use Windows Explorer to copy&paste or drag&drop files
to your hearts content.
