I have been uninstalling some apps. (with their own uninstall progs!) but
since then I can't play streaming video in Explorer anymore.
I have removed / installed RealPlayer 10 several times, but the problem
remains.
The RealPlayer does play media OK from its own application, but when I try
to play a link in explorer, I just get an empty window displayed with
missing buttons etc.
Cookies enabled!

For example the RM links of the site below.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/program.html

How can I solve this?

- Windows 2000SP4
- Windows Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106
- Real Player 10.5
- DirectX 9.0c

Thanks very much for a working solution!

See this for possible help:

RealPlayer has problems or crashes when I try to play a video clip

Make sure your firewall is not blocking RP:

Configuring RealPlayer to work with a firewall

Or http://tinyurl.com/37tvff (in case the long link above breaks)

Disable any pop-up blockers, ad blockers or other "security" software and
see if that helps.

Or try this manual deletion/reinstall:

Thanks for your attempt. Wasted a whole day trying all suggestions below,
but still to no solution.
Removed all traces, rebooted, reset Explorer, removed cookies, history, temp
files, reinstalled RM, reviewed all settings...
It won't play in Explorer, nor with nor without firewall.
I can only conclude this thing is a Real terrible piece of bloated crap,
which won't do the only thing I need it for: playing rm media encountered on
line in browser. I'm afraid the only thing Real about it is the amount of
problems you're in for.

I see you've come to the conclusion that many have about Real Player. The
only other thing I can think of (and I'm sorry I didn't include this in my
original reply) - in IE go to Tools...Manage add-ons, change the Show:
drop-down menu to "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" and
make sure that IERPCtl Class and RealPlayer G2 Control are not set to
Disabled.

I have RP installed and haven't had any issues with it. But, you may want
to check out Real Alternative Lite as a way to play .rm files with out
having to have RP.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm - includes WMP
Classic.

I can't find any option 'Manage add-ons' under Tools in IE at all. (As I
wrote, I have IE 6)

change the Show:

As a matter of fact I found these yesterday after searching the internet.
But still no .rm in Explorer...

thanks again,

How about under Tools...Internet Options...Programs tab - see a "Manage
Add-ons" button there? If it's not, you may have a restriction placed on
your system via the registry or group policy. See -
http://www.winxptutor.com/sp2/extmgnt.htm

When I go there, I see one button with text which woud mean translated:
"restore web settings". (If thats the button you men this woud be a strange
translation).
Anyway, I used the button but to no aid.
I also have a check mark at the option "check wether Internet Explorer is
default browser".

But tis all solves nothing. I have the free real player installed now, and
it does play real streams from the internet.
But I still can't make them play in Internet Explorer. Clicking a real
format link brings up an empty window with missing buttons and NOTHING
happens.
(E.g. When I choose the Quicktime link, I get a suggestion to install
Quicktime.)

Some part of IE seems to be damaged and it doesn't seem to be affected by
reinstalling RealPlayer.
I haven't a clue what other parts can be involved/damaged/missing, apart
from RealPlayer.

I think there's no hope in my situation other than reinstalling Windows?
I read some articles about repairing Internet Explorer, but I'm running
Windows 2000 AND have applied servicepack 4. I understood there's no way
back then...?

OK, had a look at your link above (although I have Windows2000)
In regedit I can't go further than:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \

after Microsoft I dont have an entry:

\ Internet Explorer \

after Microsoft I only have the entries:

\ Conferencing \

and:

\ SystemCertificates \ ...with subs.

Can I just add the missing entry?

Jon,

That's an XPsp2 feature you're looking for.

Check the headers:

<extract:>
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1807
</extract>

It's not XPsp2. ; }

Ah, good catch, Robert. Thanks for the tap on the old noggin'. I should
have known - and OP is using Win2K, so wouldn't have IE 6 SP-2 neither. My
apologies, Linea. Sorry that I'm out of ideas, too. Have you posted to the
RP groups I mentioned in my original reply?

I have been contacting RP support, and at the moment I have installed the
free Real player. This part works OK, so it plays RealMedia streams on line,
but ONLY in its own browser.

Internet Explorer is another story: I still can't play real video from links
when browsing with Internet Explorer.
The only thing RP support know is that this must be due to "an Internet
Explorer plug in". They sent me a link to an MS support page, containing
(confusing) information about repairing Internet Explorer, which seems ONLY
possible for Windows 2000 if no service packs are installed. Since I already
have SP4 there seems to be no way back other than reinstalling Windows.

All apps seem to be intertangled. What a mess... :-((
