Doesn't find any of the most common spyware !!!!!
Coolwebsearch, I-lookup, Clicker 6.0, BetterInternet. I
can name 20 more... So whats the point? Are they going to
do anything against the most common spyware problems?
It's Microsofts spysoftwre gettting attacked especially
ActiveX in Internet Explorer thats letting the other
syware in. You think they could fix thier own work. I'm
pissed....

Try running full system scans in safe mode. On the Scan Page, choose scan
options > full system scan (check boxes below) the click Run Scan Now.
CWS is very problematice, here are some removal instructions specifically
for it:
From Chuck:
CoolWebSearch is a constantly mutating major nuisance. The best tool to
diagnose it is HijackThis, and expert advice. HijackThis shows all possible
traces of software, anything that MIGHT be malware, and lets an expert
identify the bad stuff manually.

HijackThis http://www.tomcoyote.com/hjt/

Create a separate folder for HijackThis, such as C:\HijackThis - copy the
downloaded file there.

Then, run HijackThis ("Scan"). Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save
the HJT Log.

Finally, have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the
following security forums (and please post a link to your forum posts,

Hello Ken

I hope your Windows are updated also your antivirus.

Also--send a Tools, Suspected Spyware Report from
Microsoft Antispyware, and detail the cleaning issue you
are finding.

Good luck

Engel,

My Computer:
3 Gig Pentium 4 / 2 Gig memory
Abit Motherboard
Running WindowsXP
Service Pack 2
All updates and critical patches are current
AVG Professional Antivirus all definitions up to date
Was running Norton Antivirus but to many attacks on it.

Anti Spyware running:
Spybot: Search & destroy
Spywareblaster
Ad-aware SE Professional
Microsoft Antispyware

I build and service computers for a living.......

The problem is Microsoft antispyware doesnt recognize any
of the following most common spywares:

Btgrab
Clicks
ABetterInternet
Begin2search
inetconnect.dll
clicker 6.0
CoolWebsearch

I could name many more it doesn't even see...... so
what's the point of using it? I tried it because I was
curious. Most of these exploit ActiveX in Internet
Explorer. You would think they could fix hole in thier
own programs ????
Got any real solutions? Other than Hijackthis?

Ken

Microsoft doesn't even see the problems

Sounds like your selling software and not commenting as
to why Microsoftantispyware is not picking up anything?
I know all about hijackthis. If I wanted to guess at
editing the Registry and run the chance of corrupting it.
Post logs on a website wait three months for an answer
and maybe not get one and let a host of downloaded
keyloggers and malicious spyware rack my computer I would
probably use your method. Isn't antispyware software
supposed to get rid of spyware? I was just stating a
fact... It doesn't pick up ANY of the most common
Spywares:

CoolWebSearch
Begin2search
offeroptimizer
ABetterInternet
Clicks
inetconnect.dll
Btgrab
Clicker 6.0
and 100 more.....

They should call it Beta 0

Ken

MS antispyware found CWS process on our test (non
production) workstation. Problem with CWS is that it
renames itself randomly and crawls all over the registry.
Remeber one of the key words in this software trial
is "Beta".
Diable active x controls in internet options to lock up
that hole.

Ken--that's just plain wrong. I know from experience that Microsoft
Antispyware recognizes and cleans some variants of at least two of that
list, from direct experience.

There are a number of possibilities here: You may have different/newer
variants than the ones I've seen detected and cleaned. You may have a virus
or trojan in place--we've seen an example of this in these groups in the
last few days.

I don't want to sound like an apologist--the program is clearly not cleaning
your machine, and denying that it is incompetent doesn't help you.

Things that you can do to help Microsoft and Microsoft Antispyware:

1) submit a tools, suspected spyware report (apologies if you have already
said that this function fails on your system!)
2) try doing a full, deep scan in safe mode. Agreed that this should not be
necessary, but realistically, in the current state of the beta, it helps.

If you really want help getting this system clean (I'm not clear on that--I
know you are trying to give good feedback about the state of Microsoft
Antispyware, but is this also a real-world cleaning situation?)--you can use
the system explorers yourself to block suspect or unknown objects in the
various categories available--or you can avail yourself of Ron Kinner's
offers of HijackThis log analysis. The first of these requires considerable
expertise, and still won't clean all threats, perhaps including those you've
listed--not certain. The second is not only non-Microsoft, but involves
trusting "gasp" a volunteer who is offering help. Some folks feel that's a
length they aren't willing to go to in a given situation--it's up to you.
