does WinXP x64 qualify for Vista upgrade?

Hi, I have a copy of Win XP x64 NFR that I got from AMD's Tech Tour. Does
this software allow me to buy the upgrade version of Vista Ultimate?

Thanks!

Carey,

I've never installed this software. And don't plan, too. Just want to
possibly use it as an upgrade path. Also the upgrade advisor seems to be 32
bit only.

Aaron

If you want to upgrade you will need xp64 installed and activated, Gone are
the days of just supplying a disc and booting with the upgrade disc.
So goes the stories anyway.

Ok, so it seems I can buy the upgrade version of VIsta. Then I'll need a
fresh install of the WinXP x64, and then I can upgrade to Vista. That's
fine. I just wanted to make sure the Not For Resale version of the software
would be upgradable, as opposed to buying the full version.

IF your question is specifically about whether or not NFR stuff is
upgradable, the answer is yes.

Hello,
So the question also revolves around what you are asking somewhat.
If you are asking whether the Windows XP X64 NFR edition meets the
compliance check for using the Upgrade version of Windows Vista x64 version
then the answer is yes.
If you are asking whether you can upgrade from Windows XP X64 edition to
aWindows Vista 64-bit version then the answer is no you would have to
install to another folder or to another volume.
Thanks,

NFR copies are fine, you just can't transfer the software to another person.
Now, set aside all these replies and take note. Everything you are being
told is only true of Vista x86 upgrade editions.

First of all, there are TWO ways to use an x64 UE. Your choice.

(1) Boot with the dvd. Unlike x86, x64 UEs do not have to run from a
desktop. (If you were running a 32bit OS you couldn't run the x64 Setup
from the desktop because x64 Setup is itself a 64bit app.)

2) Run Setup from the XP Pro x64 desktop. Since you are running a 64bit
OS, the Vista x64 Setup will run in your OS.

In both cases the upgrade option will be disabled but you can do a custom
install.

If you do (1) you should be able to format the target drive after Setup
verifies your installed copy of XP Pro x64 because XP Pro x64 is not
running. If you do (2) you will not be able to format the target drive
because XP Pro x64 is running and you cannot format the system volume of a
running OS.

With Vista you have to install the software in order to use it as the
upgrade path. Vista does not check shiny media like past Windows upgrade
editions did. The legacy cd is meaningless now.

Darrell:
Wouldn't installing Vista x64 into a different folder or another
volume create a dual boot scenario which would be an EULA breach. Have a
great day.

Hello Dennis,
Yes I suppose it would. However Windows Vista X64 doesn't support
upgrading from prior releases of Windows, it will only upgrade other 64-bit
versions of Windows VIsta, You can only do custom installs with it when
you have a legacy OS installed.
