her she has windows xp and I have windows 2000.
Does she have to buy microsoft office to open word

Windows XP is an "Operating System". It does not include Microsoft Word.

Greetings --

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.

No. Go to www.openoffice.org and download OpenOffice. It will open and edit
Word documents and it's FREE!
