question:
i have successfully added an xp workstation to a home
lan, running under an nt4.0 domain controller with
microsoft proxy server 2.0
the domain controller reaches out to the net with a dsl
connection.
from the xp workstation, i have full network services, i
a can ping the domain controller and ping the default
router that goes to the dsl modem.

but ie tells me 'cannot find server'. i've had this occur
with win98/w2k, but updating the mspclient has always
fixed the issue.

i have installed the mspclient 2.0 on the xp workstation.
the install seems to have worked (update successful
message), the static ip address is within the range of
addresses set up on the proxy server, but i simply can't
get passed this point.
any insight on this?

Rename the copy of Wsock32.dll in (default location here)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache prior to installing the msp client.

bob,

okay, bob -- you walk on water. i wouldn't have figured
this out until microsoft released windows 2007. it turned
out that wsock32.dll was in the root of system32 -- but no
matter, it worked. and i don't want to know why, it just
worked and that's fine with me.
now i can go on with the experiment.

Happy to help. If it goes back to its old behaviour, look again for the
DLLCache and rename it there too ;)
