If I run windows system restore and go back to 1 week prior, would I loose
any personal docs or xls files on my machine?

No, but back up is a computer user's best friend. You should always back
up your data on a regular basis.

You shouldn't do, but do a backup just in case!

No. System Restore affects "system" files and not your personal data
files.

On the other hand, having a data file backup before you do the restore
is a wise idea, just in case.

You not only wouldn't loose any of them, you wouldn't lose any of them
either.
