Does Win2K AS need DNS service running?

Hi All,

When I configured my Win2KAS, I went back and turned off
the DNS services on the server, because it was
interferring with the DHCP server in the building.

However, I can't get my Win2K and WinXPpro clients to
authenticate to the domain. Do I need to turn DNS service
back on, on the server to get the clients to find the
domain controller?

Thanks,

Jim,

Definately, 90 percent of the problems I have encountered
in AD has been related to the clients not being able to
resolve names via DNS. DNS is mandatory on a Win2k AD
Domain. Everything it related to DNS in AD, replication,
Authentication, etc.

Hi Jimbo,

You do need to have DNS to support a Windows 2000 Domain. DNS should not
interfere with your DHCP server. What problem were you having with before
you removed DNS?

I think I have figured it out. When the Win98 clients couldn't get their IP info from the corp. DHCP server, I went to the newly installed server and started turning things off. First I turned off DHCP, cause I'm not delivering the addresses. While I was at it, I noticed DNS was running. I'm not running a DNS service (I thought), so I turned it off too.

I turned DNS back on and pointed both the PDC server and the XP and 2k clients to it and they are now finding the server and the domain just fine.

Thanks for the Help,

Jimbo,
